Well, the Oak Tree Barn now looks well and truly like a building site, complete with large pile of rubble and porta loo! Over the last couple of weeks the builders have been busy doing ground works in preparation for the garage, moving water and drainage services to the right points, building the dormer to create the bathroom, erecting partitions to the bedrooms and most excitingly for me, knocking down the interior walls. This has made an enormous impact on the way the barn looks and gives us a really good feeling for how it will feel when complete. It was so exciting to walk in and think ‘yes, this is exactly how it’s supposed to be’.
Next week sees the roofer arrive to put on an entirely new roof, the old felt was just too brittle and there were just too many little twinkly areas of daylight for it to be patched and repaired. The tiles too will be renewed as they apparently also have a lifespan after which they become porous – who knew! The carpenters are now off site and beavering away in their workshop building doors and shutters which are being made from Red Cedar for the exterior and Larch inside, the cedar will quickly fade to a lovely silvery grey which should sit nicely against the stone.
There is a bumper crop of delicious blackberries this year, Polly and I had a lovely afternoon picking on Sunday which resulted in a spot of jam making last night. Plenty more to pick, so please share your best blackberry recipes!
